Holbox is one of only a few destinations in the world where you can walk over the waves. A small Caribbean island located on the tip of Yucatan’s peninsula, in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo.

With white sandbanks and quiet, crystalline waters, here nature paints a stunning palette of Méxican colours; from profuse jungle greens, and the vivid turquoise of the sea to the passionate reds and oranges of our sunsets…colours that blend and merge, and in a few minutes can change the mood of the surroundings, making this a romantic and unique destination.

The main characteristic of the island is the natural and wild environment. Here you can stroll along wide beaches and soak up an atmosphere that is hard to find anywhere else. Far away from mass tourism, it will offer you a unique and peaceful place to unwind and relax on your holiday.

In the protected nature reserve on the island, you can immerse yourself in nature and see flamingos, raccoons, iguanas, crocodiles and a great variety of birds that choose this place to nest.

Holbox in the Mayan language means “black hole”, due to the deepness of the Yala-hau lagoon, that divides the island from the continent, where the waters of the Mexican gulf join the Caribbean Sea.

Holbox and the Yucatan Peninsula are steeped in Mayan history. Here you can find some of the most famous archaeological site in México.

Holbox island is a nature reserve that has only become a tourist destination in the last few years, offering visitors the opportunity to see the wildest and purest virgin face of this beautiful country. It is close to famous Caribbean islands such as Cozumel, known for its beautiful reefs, Isla Mujeres, and countless archaeological sites like Chichen Itza and Cobá, together with historical cities like Valladolid, Izamal and Merida.

The unique island of Holbox is truly a tropical paradise, protected by miles of jungle, far away from stress and crowded cities; free of cars, pollution, night clubs and shopping malls, and is one of the only a handful of islands where the only way to travel around the sandy streets is on foot, bicycle or an electric golf cart.

The nature reserve extends for forty kilometres and is divided into: Isla Chica (small island) where the town is located. Isla Chica is just 8 kilometres long and 2 kilometres wide, and Isla Grande (big island) that is 32 kilometres long and only 3 kilometres at its widest.

Imagine a little fishing town, founded over 200 years ago by pirate settlers and their ships…where even today the paths are just sand and where you can enjoy the sea in all of its natural simplicity. That is Holbox!
