What to do on a trip to Holbox?

Without a doubt, if you have reached this remote island, you will want to relax and enjoy nature and our beautiful scenery.

The powder white sand beaches, typical of the Caribbean, are perfect for an unforgettable holiday.

The whole island is car free, so to discover it you will need to walk, rent a bicycle or a golf cart. In the colourful main town you will find little gift shops to buy souvenirs, small supermarkets and, of course, plenty of gastronomic options where you can try Mexican and international dishes to the rhythm of the Caribbean music.

One of the greatest natural attractions that Holbox island offers is swimming with whale sharks (between May and September). If you decide to enjoy this incredible experience you can book with one of the tour services that we offer.

You can also discover the classic Three Island tour, in which you will explore Isla pájaros (Bird island), where you can see several birds species, ideal for ornithology lovers; Isla Pasión (Passion island) a lovely virgin islet and Yala-hau cenote which is a natural fresh water pool.

Another option is to spend a day at Cabo Catoche, the northernmost spot in Yucatán… a place practically uninhabited, submerged on the virgin reserve. Here you can snorkel with sea turtles and colourful tropical fish.

If you are looking for more adrenaline, you can jump into the jungle on a kayak tour between the mangroves and the Kuka river. A guide will take you for a few hours to enjoy the wild nature and watch (from a distance) crocodiles, flamingos and hundreds of birds species choose this corner of paradise to nest each year.

You can choose to explore the island from tip to tip on a bicycle or on horseback. Holbox is part of Yum-Balam nature reserve, a protected area where you can see pink flamingos, pelicans, raccoons, iguanas and many more animals whilst also respecting their natural habitat.

On darker nights and when the moon allows, you can enjoy the spectacular phenomenon of bioluminescence, which has become one of the most popular attractions for visitors.

Bioluminescence is the light produced by tiny plankton in the sea as they move about, particularly when stirred up by swimming or other vibrations. The water around these plankton lights up giving a sensation of swimming between the stars, definitely a unique and exciting experience.

If you are a water sports fan, you can enjoy kitesurfing sessions or sail on a hobie cat (experts only or take a guide with you). On your adventure you can enjoy the endless beaches that surround the island while you enjoy the calm waters and the soft breeze during the day or at sunset.

For fishing lovers, the island offers unique opportunities, being at the intersection of the Mexican gulf and the Caribbean Sea. This is one of the best places to fish in the world.

You can embark and practice deep fishing on our crystalline waters, trawl fishing, vertical jigging the reef, fly fishing on the sides of the lagoon and other kinds of fishing.
Without forgetting the tournaments that you can take part in at various dates throughout the year.

For those who want to take care of their bodies, you can practice yoga or spoil yourself with a typical Mayan massage at the beach, at the hotel or inside your room.

Twenty minutes away from the island, on the mainland, you can take a unique excursion to “El Corchal”, a magic and exotic place where you can appreciate a truly natural show: a real floating forest, an ecosystem of trees that, thanks to the unique climate, float on the water to protect and preserve itself.
A short distance from here, you can see the millennial tree, a ceiba that is more than 750 years old with majestic branches that extend to the blue sky.

Holbox island is a small Caribbean paradise that distinguishes itself from the rest of the touristic centers known at the Riviera Maya for being a tranquil place without the presence of shopping malls, or massive nightclubs as in Playa del Carmen or Cancún.

Visit the paradise of Holbox island and relax walking along powder white sandy beaches, swim with whale sharks and taste delicious Mexican culinary delights, rediscovering a tranquillity and magic now mostly lost.
